This week saw a dramatic end to the programme’s national esports qualifiers, with two additional teams joining last week's Regional Champions after battling it out on Twitch's homepage to an audience of 675+, playing Blizzard's Overwatch.
Our third Regional Qualifier of the tournament was hosted by Belong in Bristol's city centre, welcoming visiting schools from the far reaches of Southern England, to Northern Ireland.
In attendance were esports coaches, Pablo Calvo (Space Ape Games) for New College Swindon and Adam Whyte (The Goat Agency) for De La Salle College, who casted alongside aspiring students and shared knowledge about careers in esports. The day concluded with Cryptonite of The Crypt School in Gloucester being crowned Regional Champions 2018.
The following day saw the final qualifier of the series back on DSH's home turf in London, at Belong Kingston. Schoolhouses from the Greater London area and slightly further afield, competed for the last space in The Grand Final, taking place on Wednesday 11 April 2018. Here, Alex "Not That Chrome" Carmichael, committed his time to the role of pro-shoutcaster; sharing his tips and tricks with students who wanted to wow their peers with a commentating debut.
After a tense round of final matches, it was Faze Clan of Southend High School for Boys who were victorious and the final team to join Team Veracity (St John Fisher Voluntary Catholic Academy), KES Battle Bards (King Edward VI School) and Cryptonite in The Grand Final.
Notably, participating in Kingston's qualifier was the first all-female team of this stage in the competition, from Townley Grammar School in Bexleyheath. Their esports coach, Deborah Mensah-Bonsu (Space Ape Games) accompanied the team for support throughout the competition, and although they weren't awarded the winning title of the day, the team achieved an amazing feat before they even arrived - proving age doesn't outweigh skill - beating sixth formers to represent their school at the qualifiers!
