It’s been one week since our new lead partnership with Nintendo UK was announced, and here at Ukie HQ we’re still reeling with excitement from the riot of activity and engagement that we’ve received in positive response.

We also announced the Digital Schoolhouse Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Team Battle, together with Nintendo Switch. This immersive careers experience is estimated to reach over 6000 pupils in schools & colleges across the UK, providing a unique insight into the creative digital sector, to promote homegrown talent and to enable students to aspire to careers pathways they may not have otherwise considered.

We're delighted that for the first time ever, our tournament title is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate; predicted to successfully engage both girls and boys with over 70 playable characters across the series. Teachers and pupils will experience minimal setup and maximum mobility, in a tournament that for the first time ever, isn’t bound to the Computing room.

What are the technical requirements?

This year’s tournament is our most accessible yet. All you need is a Nintendo Switch and a copy of the game which you can plug into any TV or monitor to run! Nintendo Switch is also a portable device and can run without a monitor too. Pick it up and play wherever your school or college allows.

What is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a 2018 fighting game published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch and it is the fifth instalment in the Super Smash Bros. series.

In the game, players control one of various characters and must use differing attacks to weaken their opponents and knock them out of an arena. It features a wide variety of game modes, including a campaign for single-player and multiplayer versus modes.

As a participant of the Digital Schoolhouse Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Team Battle, you’ll receive a teacher starter pack with simple instructions on how to get started, including everything you need to know about the game.

The game includes every playable character from previous Super Smash Bros. games; from Nintendo's mascots to characters from third-party franchises. There are over 70 different characters to choose from, many of which will have to be unlocked through gameplay.

Its large and diverse range of characters, combined with a mixture of both causal and competitive game modes, make Super Smash Bros. Ultimate one of the most accessible and fun games available. As a result, we’re extremely excited about this year’s tournament.

You can find more detail on the game, its modes, characters, gameplay and techniques here.

What is the educational impact?

Our aim is to show students that esports is not just about playing games, but that by taking part they learn skills that are vital for personal development. Students might not even realise that while they’re having a great time playing and orgainsing the tournament in their school or college, they are also practicing soft skills such as team work, communication, public speaking, and leadership. In particular, students improved their communication (74%) and team working (80%) skills.
