Schoolhouse of the month: Langley Grammar School

We are lucky to work with some of the most creative and ingenious teachers you can find. Here, you'll discover the amazing work that our Schoolhouse do. Each month we'll be featuring one of our Schoolhouses, so you can learn more about this amazing community of schools and colleges.

Our next schoolhouse is none other than our DSHesports runners-up, and one of our oldest Schoolhouses on the programme: it's Langley Grammar!

1. How long have you been a DSH?

We were the original Digital Schoolhouse many moons ago, however we have been part of this new, fabulous group of DSHs since 2017.

2. What video game/ game are you currently enjoying and why?

I do not play computer games, but my youngest daughter enjoys Minecraft with her friends. She loves the adventures and creativity. The game helped her survive her lockdown experience and gave her social interaction with her peers. Minecraft is now a regular part of her Saturday morning online meet up with her friends.

3. What do you love about being a teacher?

I love the unknown, as you never know what the day or next lesson will bring. A student will always make you laugh at some point during the day. You never stand still you are continually developing new ideas and projects to improve your teaching or to engage students. In computing there is frequently something new to learn or explore.

4. Favourite light-bulb or creative moment as a teacher?

I love the excitement with using physical devices where students get so animated when they first get their device or robot to work. The grins and smiles make my day.

5. What have you enjoyed the most as a teacher so far this year?

This has to be getting to the Grand Final of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Team Battle 2022. From starting the journey to find the school’s champion team in the crowded computer rooms at lunchtimes with screaming students, to the organisational learning curve with Discord at the online Regional Qualifiers. Then, to the competitive adventure of the South Semi-finals, and finally to the nail biting experience of the Grand Final, final match at Gfinity Esport Arena. We came runners up, but wow, what an experience for not just the players but the student event organisers and the spectators.
